Have you ever wondered what it takes to become a licensed bail bond agent in Florida?

33rd Street Bail Bonds explains the process involved in becoming a licensed bail bonds agent.

The first step is determining if you are eligible to be a bail bond agent.

In Florida, you must be a Florida resident, must be at least 18 years old, must have a high school diploma or G.E.D., and must be a U.S. citizen or legally authorized to work in the United States. You cannot be guilty of a felony crime nor can you be a former police officer, law enforcement professional, an attorney, a judge, a bailiff, or be working in a prison or have authority over inmates in a prison. You must also not have a criminal background and pass background reference checks. Many bail bond agents have an associate’s or bachelor’s degree. Those degrees usually have an emphasis on law, criminal justice, psychology, or police studies.

If you are eligible to be a bail bond agent, then you must complete a state approved 120-hour basic certification course. You must also take an approved correspondence course, submit an application for a temporary bail bond agent license and undergo a background check. After meeting these requirements, you need to complete a one-year internship underneath the guidance of a licensed bail bond agent. Finally, you must pass a final exam that is administered by the state Department of Financial Services.

Once you complete all of these steps, then you can apply for a Florida bail agent limited surety license. Your license is then good for two years. After the two-year period, to qualify for a license renewal, you must complete 14 hours of continuing education during your licensure period.
