April is Child Abuse Prevention Month
According to the Florida Statutes, child abuse is defined as “a child whose physical or mental health or welfare is harmed, or threatened with harm, by the acts or omissions of the parent.” This includes physical and mental injuries from excessive corporal punishments, sexual battery, abandonment, disfigurement, death, and injury to intellectual or psychological capacity.
In 2015, the most recent year for data, the National Children’s Alliance states that nearly 700,000 children were abused.
The statistics show:
•Neglect is the most common form of maltreatment with 75% of children
•17.2% suffered physical abuse
•8.4% suffered sexual abuse
•Some of the children end up suffering more than one form of maltreatment
In most cases, 78.1% of the children were victimized by their parent.
33rd Street Bail Bonds offers tips on preventing child abuse:
•Be a nurturing parent. Let your child know that he is special and loved
•Discipline your child when you are calm. Do not discipline your child when you are angry. Time outs and loss of privileges are good ways of disciplining
•If you are feeling overwhelmed or stressed, get help. Stress can lead to abuse since the adult takes out the stress on the child
•Respect your children and treat them the way you want to be treated
•Help another parent when you know they are struggling
If you, a family member or child you know may be suffering there are several agencies in the state of Florida that can help. The Florida Department of Children and Families is available.
