Black Friday and Cyber Monday are history, now watch out for Porch Pirates!

Now, all of those packages that have been ordered for the holidays are starting to arrive on doorsteps. Unfortunately, thieves are well aware of this and are taking advantage of your absence in order to steal your packages. These thieves, better known as “porch pirates” strike in broad daylight as well as at night.

Approximately one billion packages will be delivered during the holiday season. According to insurancequotes.com, “approximately 23 million Americans have had packages stolen from their homes before they could open them.” The United States Postal Service also received more than 96,000 complaints about stolen mail last year.

can you do to protect yourself from these thieves? 33rd Street Bail Bonds offers these tips:
•Ask for a tracking number for your packages and keep tabs on the delivery date
•Ask for a “signature delivery option”. This requires a signature in order to receive the package
•Ask for your packages to be delivered at a specific time or on a specific date
•Send your packages to the store to be picked up (utilize the ship to store feature)
•Have your packages delivered to work or to a relative/friend who will be home to pick them up
•Ask for your packages to be delivered to the back door
•Use technology to help! A new invention called the package guard can be purchased where you have the delivery placed on the package guard (a disk). After tapping in a code on the app, you lift the package off of the disk. If a thief takes it, a 100-decibel alarm goes off.
•Utilize Amazon Locker. This is where delivered packages are sent to a secure location. You are given a code and enter the code into the “locker” in order to retrieve your packages
•Use security cameras to monitor your front porch
•Buy a lock-box and have your delivery person place the items in the box. Once the box is closed, you access your packages through a code
•Send your packages to a Fed Ex or UPS location and pick them up there

Thieves frequently follow Fed Ex, UPS, and the United States Mail trucks and watch for package deliveries. By following the tips above, you can help to minimize theft.
