The speed limit in Florida school zones can be up to 20mph. According to the Department of Motor Vehicles, special speed limit signs are posted around schools to alert you as you enter the zone. These signs have flashing lights to tell you when the lower speed limit is in effect. Kids will be crossing the street on foot and on their bicycles. There will be extra heavy traffic of parents picking up their kids.
Additionally, there will be school buses entering or exiting the school. Pay special attention when school buses are present. When a school bus stops with it’s lights flashing you must stop. Never pass a school bus that is loading or unloading children. Passing a stopped school bus is very dangerous and can carry a 4-point infraction. Be aware that fines are doubled for speeding in a construction or school zone. There is a minimum fine of $165 and if you pass on the side where children enter and exit the bus, you could receive a minimum fine of $265. If injury occurs you can be required to do community service, have your license suspended and incur a $1,500 fine. Know the laws about stopping for school buses.

The Florida Law requires all drivers moving in either direction on a two-way street must stop for a school bus displaying a stop signal and must remain stopped until the road is clear of children AND the school bus stop arm is withdrawn.
