Dangers of Pokemon Go

Pokemon Go is the newest craze across the United States. For those who aren’t familiar with it, basically it is game that is played on your smart phone. The game uses your phone’s GPS to locate Pokemon characters and capture them. The game uses “augmented reality” to enhance the area around you. You travel with your phone and “find” characters that appear in the real landscape around you. Sounds like innocent fun, right?

Unfortunately, criminals have figured out ways to lure unsuspecting players right into a crime. In O’Fallon, Missouri, four teenagers activated the lure beacon on their Pokemon Go games and lured victims to their location. Once the victims arrived, the teens took advantage of their distraction and robbed them at gunpoint. Other players are trespassing on private property in order to capture the creatures. Some players are playing the game while they are driving and causing traffic accidents, and we thought texting and driving was dangerous! 911 calls have increased as people are suspecting the Pokemon players to be possible criminals who are just lurking around. There is even a report of a teen been killed in North Carolina. The teen was trying to capture a rare Pokemon that seemed to be located in a home in his neighborhood. Unfortunately, he chose to look for this character at 1am and was shot by the homeowner who caught him trying to come into her home through an unlocked kitchen window.
