What Is Domestic Violence?

Domestic violence encompasses physical, financial, and psychological abuse. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have been victims of some form of physical violence by an intimate partner within their lifetime. According to the Huffington Post, 98% of financial abuse occurs in all domestic violence cases. The victim keeps returning to the abuser since the abuser holds the purse strings.

Florida law defines domestic violence as, “any assault, aggravated stalking, kidnapping, false imprisonment, or any criminal offense resulting in physical injury or death of one family or household member by another family or household member.” Domestic violence happens in all types of families. 33rd Street Bail Bonds wants you to be aware of the signs of domestic abuse.

Here are a few signs of an abusive relationship:
•A partner who keeps money away from you
•A partner who is extremely jealous and wants you to account for every moment of your time
•A partner who keeps you isolated from friends or family and wants to control you
•A partner that doesn’t want you to work or go to school
•A partner that hits you
•A partner that humiliates and embarrasses you
•A partner that threatens to take away your kids
•A partner that threatens to harm your children or pets
•A partner that forces you to have sex

Signs that a person is being abused include:
•The abused person has frequent injuries that are deemed “accidents”
•The person frequently misses work, social occasions, or school
•May have limited access to money
•May be unable to see friends and family
•May have to “check in” with their partner frequently (the abuser is controlling)

You can help. If you think a friend or family member is being abused, then speak up. Have a private conversation with that person. Tell them that you are concerned and that they can confide in you. Offer help such as the phone number for the national domestic violence hotline which is 1-800-799-7233, and support the decisions that your friend/family member makes. Don’t wait, it could be too late.
