Social and Gender Roles – How the Law Can Come Into Play

Did you know what might be culturally accepted in other countries may not be acceptable in the United States? For example, in India, it is acceptable for a man to beat his wife if he feels she is being disobedient. According to a 2015 article in “The Age”, this treatment occurs in Indian communities due to social and gender roles. In the United States, that is deemed domestic violence.

In the news, a man (Mr. Kalsi), living in Riverview, FL, contacted his parents in India to let them know that his wife was being “disobedient”. Mr. Kalsi’s parents flew from India to his home to help him “discipline” his wife. According to police reports, Mr. Kalsi’s wife, Silky Gaind, was badly beaten and covered in bruises. Mr. Kalsi and his parents were arrested and face various charges. Mr. Kalsi and his father were charged with false imprisonment, child abuse, and denying access to 911. Mr. Kalsi was also charged with felony battery. His father charged with the above along with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. Mr. Kalsi’s mother charged with battery, domestic violence, and failure to report child abuse.

Penalties…

Penalties for these charges could include jail time, fines, completion of the Batterer’s Intervention program, counseling, and probation. Domestic violence is prosecuted aggressively in the state of Florida.
