Summer is almost here!

Children will be out of school and home for the summer. Make sure that your child will be supervised and taken care of during this summer break.

33rd Street Bail Bonds wants you to be aware of child neglect laws.

What is child neglect?
Child neglect occurs when “a caregiver fails to provide a child with the essential care, supervision, and services necessary to maintain the child’s physical and mental health, or fails to take reasonable steps to protect the child from abuse, neglect, or exploitation by another person. This includes food and nutrition, clothing, shelter, supervision, medicine and medical services. This can be based on repeated conduct or on a single incident or omission that results in, or could reasonable be expected to result in, serious physical or mental injury, or a substantial risk of death to a child.” In Florida, child neglect is a third- degree felony and could result in up to five years in prison, five years of probation, and a $5000 fine.

If you suspect that a child is being abused or neglected, then it needs to be reported immediately.

Florida law requires “any person in Florida who knows or has reasonable cause to suspect that a child is being abused, neglected, or abandoned by a parent, legal custodian, caregiver, or other person responsible for the child’s welfare must immediately report that knowledge or suspicion to the Florida Abuse Hotline of the Department on Children and Families. Failure to report is a felony of the third degree.” There are many ways to make a report, by phone, fax, or online. The toll- free number is 1-800-96-ABUSE (1-800-962-2873). The fax number is 1-800-914-0004. To report online, please go to https://www.myflfamilies.com/service-programs/abuse-hotline/report-online.shtml.
